It's been a long time! Sorry for not stopping by the channel for a while, things have been really busy with work and gamemaking, so I haven't been very social online for a while. Hopefully I can drop by soon though and say hello and hear the news.

Hope you're all doing well, last we talked some of you were waiting for some pretty important events to happen this year after all. But yeah, won't get into that here.

Just wanted to make a sound and let you know I haven't abandoned the Teacup or anything :)

Development Discussion / The question about good writing

So here we go... I'm sure everyone has already seen this:
I thought it could be interesting to try and get a productive discussion out of it.

In terms of EVN's, do you have any good measuring point in terms of "good writing"? Is it a Hemingway or a Kinoko Nasu? How do think the evn's being created in this day and age fare in terms of writing?

When discussions about "polish" and "professionality" are brought up in evn creator circles, I feel they are often based mostly on presentation. That is the direction and visuals and how good those are. But as those parts of a vn have gradually increased in quality, the writing of the works often still get blamed for holding back the final product.

So... do you agree? Have the writings of EVN's really not changed at all?

I'm not sure that is the case. A lot of new creators keep entering the scene since it is still so 'young', so of course there is still loads to learn. Some stories have good writing with poor content, and others have great ideas with weak writing. But I also think that some really good ones appear from time to time too. Actually my biggest problem with evn's right now is the lack of themes that interest me, not necessarily the quality of writing itself.

Japanese VN's... the great stars that we 'contend' against. Commercial jvn's have wonderful artists on board and well-known writers. Some of them even have good writing. I'd say though, that many of those are pretty mediocre in that department as well. There are many titles that I believe would never have the following and popularity they have today, were it not for the shiny art and promotion. I am a big fan of jvn's and there are certainly gems among them, but there are several times in almost every one of them, where I have to stop and facepalm. Others take an eternity to trudge through due to fillers.

So my opinion at this point:
EVN vs general JVN -->  we're getting there.
EVN vs books --> still gotta work for it.

(Note: when comparing writing between evn and jvn, I mean the level of writing quality, not in terms of trying to 'make it like the Japanese do'.)

How do you prefer tenses when used in visual novels? Past or present tense?

I notice how past tense is often used in general storytelling, but that present tense is used in most visual novels. I guess this has something to do with how the story is told in 1st person and that it tries to immerse the player in the story.

Although I previously used to use past tense as well, I also remember a teacher saying how present tense could be more powerful in certain kind of stories, and urged us to do that – I also remember ignoring him/her completely of course :P But that aside…

What do you like best when reading a vn? What sounds more effective/natural?

Recently after moving into vn-writing/translating territory I have gotten used to writing in present tense, but some recent discussion with someone else has made me wonder what is really best...

Welcome to the Writing Workshop! The idea with this is to create a little challenge that can us visual novel creators improve our writing skills.

People will volunteer on writing chapters in a predetermined story. The story will be limited to a certain number of chapters, maybe dependant on the number of participants that sign up.

Writers will be assigned to chapters, and each take turn on writing this story. When chapter 1 is finished and posted, other writers will get a chance to read and comment on this while writer 2 begins the continuation. This will take place in a separate Critics thread, where the purpose is to share ideas and impressions and thereby try to improve each other’s writing abilities. How did he/she handle characters, twists, execution?

Then chapter 2 will be posted for discussion, chapter 3 will begin production and so on until the final chapter that ends the story.

This exercise will not be a competition – writers will not have to try and create the most exciting and mind-bending chapter in order to take the grand prize. It is a cooperation where people try to help each other improve, share ideas and hopefully create something interesting along the way.

So far there are no rules on chapter length, but while having time to discuss finished chapters is necessary and fine, it will also be important that writers do not stall the project for eternity because they write too much/get nothing done. Please only sign up for this if you are committed to writing your chapter and taking part in the critical discussion.

People who are not signed up as writers in this workshop are of course also more than welcome to take part in the critics thread and give their thoughts and opinions on the chapters.

And remember to have fun as well!

Development Discussion / What do you enjoy the most?

This is not a question of what you necessarily do the best in the process of making your visual novel, but what part of the creation do you enjoy the most?

I usually present myself as an artist, and I love illustrating stories (when it goes well) and thinking of what I can do to improve my projects through art. This is probably also what I do best. But I think that the part I get the most enjoyment through is the writing of the story itself.

Writing is difficult, but it is something I have always done like with drawing. And I find that there is something very satisfying and enjoyable in having finished writing a part in a story that you feel turned out well, and putting your feelings into words when trying to describe the happenings.
(Well, of course writing has its bad moments like with everything else. It’s not easy at all.)

I have no idea whether my writing is any good… especially in a 2nd language like English. I am confident that it is not awful, but it is most likely no literary masterpiece either :P While my art is lacking as well, I have more confidence in making something acceptable for other people in that department.
But I still love writing… so I hope that one day I will be able to release stories that people will enjoy reading as well.

Development Discussion / Discuss: ”Original” vs. ”Fanworks”

So, this is something that pops into my mind from time to time. I have a couple of favourite idea/subjects that I keep returning to, wishing I could make those things into reality – works based on other people’s properties, or “fan-works”. From the EVN scene, all I can think of at the moment that actually got finished was the 3-4 Sailor Moon dating games and Mikey’s game about marrying Misato. Maybe there were some 18+ games too, but I don't know much of what happens in that genre.

This is something that is very outspread in Japan through doujins though – books, games, cd’s…

But when considering the option of creating a fangame, it never really seems like a great idea in the long run. There is the looming danger of the small chance that the copyright holder might bear a grudge against your project. Or just simply the possibility that you will do an awful lot of work with little gain:
Imagine spending hours and hours on something that, in the end, you can’t really claim as ‘yours’ – unless you are lucky, all that time and energy will dissolve into anonymity of the internet, and you may never get anything back. Not even appreciation.

So often times I take those ideas and do what people often say you should: “If the idea is that good, then do something original with it instead. No one wants a lame fangame/story anyway.”
But after working a bit on adjusting the idea, it suddenly isn’t that interesting anymore, since the “spark” or basic concept that made it exciting before was so firmly rooted in the universe that inspired it. And as such the project dies once again, and maybe the author returns to his/her own personal projects.

So. What do you all think of this subject? Have you ever had the desire to make something based on a universe and a concept that isn’t yours? What did you do?
And what do you think of fangames in general, and the woes of making them?

I admit to being one of the people who, when seeing the mention of a new and grand fangame in the works, starts preaching about how that energy and creativity should be focused on ‘original’ projects instead, before later succumbing to the temptation of making a fan project myself.
This reaction is also based on the fact that many of these ideas come from a present obsession with a property that burns strongly at the moment, but which could also fade soon as the new awesome thing comes around, something that I believe is the reason that many of these projects don’t get far.

Conclusion = I am awfully divided on this subject, and in spite of my great interest in making fanworks myself, I am also very dedicated in using my limited free time on something that actually has a chance of “paying off” in the future. After all I like the thought of being able to make artbooks and the like, based on my finished projects <_< Possibilities of using fanworks for anything are obviously limited.

That also means that I will most likely never realise any of my fan ideas, but I am still very curious of what other people think of this subject.

(Sorry about the long, confusing post. That’s what happens when my brain is tired from collecting economic revisions at work all day…)

Since this forum mainly focuses on the creation of visual novels, I thought this might have interest.

One of MangaGamer's main translators has been interviewed here, talking about future games and the translation process:

In the interview he mentions chances of translating something like the Mai Hime VN, which has me psyched - that one looks really awesome.

And this is interesting too:

Q: Oh, and that last “certain other company” in your previous response sounds fascinating. Any hints you are allowed to drop on this?

A:Let’s just say I’d never want to eat their jam or their bread.

That sounds like Key! And before everyone was talking about how it was impossible to get Key to localise games. I hope MangaGamer will do well enough to convince them to do it!
It also seems that they have been improving with translation quality for each game, heading in the right direction. I hope they will be able to get rid of their bad reputation from their early faults.

Inspired by a thread I saw on another creator forum, this is a place for you to post about whatever achievements you may have reached today. It may not be a lot - but at least something you can look at and say "I did something!"

It could be anything - a piece of art, code or script maybe. As long as it is another step towards the completion of your project. And maybe even a motivational booster for other creators here.

Kevin's life changes one day with a chance meeting with a demon hunting for a glass orb. Running for his life he ends up in a nearby town, where he encounters a strange group of people also on the lookout for this glass orb. Soon he is unwillingly dragged along on this journey, and may even have to choose what side in this hunt he wishes to take.


The protagonist. Kevin lives on a farm outside a small town, where he spends his event-less days with his two friends.

A strange girl leading a small group on a hunt for magical treasure. Takes an interest in Kevin, although she seems to have her own, hidden reasons.

Part of Tia's group. Yoko is a female warrior who is very reluctant about having an outsider like Kevin join them in their quest, as she just sees him as a hindrance.

A strange, black-winged girl who follows the group from a distance.
