Development Discussion / Re: Today I created...

Have gone back to the beginning and am outlining the plot for my current project (which kind of died due to not knowing what would happen). Given that this is a story I've been playing around with since 2002, and this is the most major overhaul I've ever put it through... this is pretty big. About half the cast no longer play a part in the story. On the bright side, it lets me really think about how the branching routes will work.

I didn't mean to say that there's no such thing as originality, just that it's not the only - or even the most important - thing to judge a story on.

I'm sure I heard that there are only seven basic plots in all of fiction.

Now, it is possible to write something that is so clearly ripping off a specific piece of work that I will not touch it with a ten foot pole, but in general, it doesn't matter if you want to write, say, a comedy set in a hospital, and someone's already done that, just as long as you write it well and make it interesting. (I would like to apologise for that horrible run-on sentance.)

Or to put it another way, you could have two comedies set in hospitals that were very different in every regard but the setting - different character types, different plots, different styles of humour. Is the one that was created last "unoriginal" just because they share that one element?

I like villains who don't think of themselves as villains. While it's not the only way to write a bad guy by any means - or even the only interesting way - it interests me because I think most people won't do something they genuinely believe is wrong unless there is a very compelling reason for them to do so. I'm interested in the way a character's morality would have to be formed for them to do things that we would consider wrong and believe them to be right.

Today I finished scripting an annoying (to code, hopefully not to play) sequence of menus. Also, not today but yesterday, I finally managed to get my custom text box to work correctly in Ren'Py.

(Stupid text positioning.)
